Did you really just do that?

Yesterday morning, Natalie and I went to Costco. We got home and I was unloading the groceries from the car. Natalie was standing inside watching me from the garage door. I went out to get one more thing and saw her close the door and then heard the sound of a deadbolt being locked. My keys were inside the house, of course, and all the blinds were down, so I couldn't see her. Rob had left for a weekend trip with the scouts that morning. I just heard her start screaming and panicking.

I tried to calmly coax her to the door, but I could tell she was just sitting in one place crying. I went around to all the doors knocking and calling for her to come to me. She has unlocked doors many of times, but it's always in the situations you need it most when they won't do it, right? I made my rounds to the doors, knocking and ringing the doorbell for about half an hour. I did not want to have to call a locksmith. The neighbors heard the commotion and came over to help, but to no avail.

Then I called my friend Hayley, whose son is Natalie's friend. She came over with him and he called through the door to Natalie. Right before they got there, I was listening and it all of a sudden got perfectly quiet inside. It occurred to me that she had probably just cried herself to sleep. Of course!

So I knew all hope was lost at this point, and I called a locksmith. He came and got us in the house within a matter of 5 seconds. It's scary to think how easy it can be to break into a house.

I found her like this.

How can you get mad at this?

I have now taken measures so hopefully this will never happen again. I guess it takes a wake-up call like this to finally get smart about things.

Oh gosh! How scary! What a great/cute idea to have Hayley and Carson come over! Poor girl (both of you!). Thanks for rescuing me when I was locked out of my car! Wish I could have saved you in this situation!

At the beginning of the post I laughed out loud. Then I remembered how scared I was when Gracie did the same thing when we had just moved to AZ. It was totally sad and I felt like the worst parent. I'm glad that it worked out okay and now you have an experience for the books.
