I ran in my second 5k this past Saturday (Aug. 28th). My first 5k was at least two years ago. I decided after I had Blake that I really wanted to get back into shape, so I started jogging as soon soon as the 8 weeks was up.
The race was in Edgewood, about half an hour from my house, in a Wildlife Nature Park. The course was grueling. We ran on an uneven dirt trail with rocks and weeds and killer hills. It was the longest three miles of my life. As I started, I found a good pace and then figured that if I stayed pretty close behind the few fast guys that were in front of me, that I would do pretty well. So I did.
The guy who hosted the race is the coach of the high school girl's cross country team. He was impressed that I beat his girls across the line.
The top time is usually in the 17 or 18 minute range, and this time it was a little over 20 minutes because of the crazy terrain. My time was 25:50.
After the race, there was a pancake breakfast and an award's ceremony. They announced my name as the fastest women's time!
There's something about running that I just love. I haven't quite figured it out yet. After the race, I told Rob that running is kind of like childbirth...while you're going through it, you wonder "why did I do this to myself?" and then after it's over, a little while later, you forget how bad it was and you do it all over again.
Anxiously waiting for the race to start. (I'm in front with the green shirt)
We had a false start because the trail wasn't marked well in the beginning and everyone went the wrong way. They called us all back and we started over.
Our second start.
A view of the course.
Coming into the finish. I was completely exhausted at this point.
Pushing to the finish line.
One of my supporters. He was a champ. What a sweet boy.
Accepting my award.
